What to Wear when Visiting the Old Man Of Storr

It is essential to wear appropriate footwear (no flip-flops!) and dress for variable weather conditions.

As you may find when you arrive on Skye, the weather can change rapidly. Cold winds can blow in from the sea and bring with them heavy rain showers. Strong walking boots or trainers are highly recommended, along with waterproof jackets and – if you can – trousers in your backpack.

The path is steep in places, with large stone steps leading up the hill. Coming back down on the gravel can be tricky, as the gravel can slip from under you on the steep sections.

Take decent walking shoes as a bare minimum! My friend from LA tried it in Vans plimsolls, immediately regretting it when an almighty rain shower landed right on top of him and didn’t subside for the rest of the day.

Old Man of Storr Weather Considerations

The Storr pinnacle is relatively high up. On cloudy and foggy days the pinnacle itself is shrouded in mist. Personally, I wouldn’t recommend this hike if it is not a clear day. Without the views, this is a fairly boring trail.

It is often the case that Storr is clouded over but a few miles up the road at the Quiraing is clear. The weather can be different in different areas of the island, I’d always check ahead of time and plan your visit to Storr on the clearest day.

Storr is perhaps the most negatively affected attraction when it comes to the weather. I’d pick practically anywhere else on a bad day.
